Want to send a short email to a friend and get it delivered to his/her cell phone as SMS? If you know your friends’ phone numbers and the carrier they are on then you can easily send emails to their cell phones directly from your email program.

Most of mobile carriers offer free Email To SMS gateways which can be used to forward simple text emails to a mobile phones. And the good news, majority of those gateways are free and available to the general public.

I hope this doesn’t catch on. Until recently, I paid for text messages, and there’s no guarantee I’ll continue to get free SMS in the future. If I wanted someone to text me on my phone, I would give them the information to do so myself.

Kenneth you suck dont be such a snob we cant all afford cell phones like you you greedy bastard …F*C#@ YOU!!!

2009-06-26 21:40:16 misty

works great for those that cant afford a land line and only one cell phone this way i can at least get a hold of someone if a emergency happens

2009-07-04 01:40:01 Maria

I totally agree with you Misty.

2009-11-27 22:53:30 Mindy

i know this like totally rocks. like all my friends have a phone but i like dont and like i can totally talk to them now. THIS TOTALLY LIKE ROCKS!

2010-01-03 12:01:32 Claire

Hey Mindy, Like why don’t you like say like one more time. Like it’s totally like not annoying.

2010-01-08 12:13:34 Matt

PLEASE tell me that Mindy was just kidding with her message. Or, tell me what Valley she is from so I can make sure my daughters stay as far away from that lack of intelligence as possible (like, you know like what like I mean)…

2010-01-29 02:36:21 Ajay

way of success

2009-12-17 01:10:45 Tim Lenahan

Anyone with a cell phone who knows your cell phone number can text you without you wanting them to. Knowing how to do it via email doesn’t change that really:)

2008-11-27 21:53:26 Alan

Totally agree with Kenneth. I do use this to txt my wife, who’s plan I know has unlimited text. Just easier when I am at work and I know she’s on the road or away from a computer. Verizon is the service and it works great. I don’t think I would just text people that I don’t already normally text and get texts from – I mean, you have to know the carrier to use this – I don’t generally know someone’s carrier unless I have talked to them about phones or if we are already texting each other.

In some cases

  • the one who pays is the one who receives the SMS. ;-P

  • In Argentina, for example.

One more tip for BPL users in India……
This is really good trick that I use…..

    Email alert:
The moment you get an email you can get an alert on your mobile phone. This is how it works:

If you have a gmail ID (that’s what I use, digital card reader, hence am giving that example) go to “Setting” in top right corner. Then go to “Forwarding and POP/IMAP” then select “Forward a copy of incoming mail to” and put in your bplmobile email address…. that is 98xxxxxxxx@bplmobile.com (replace xs with your BPL mobile number). Now Save changes and enjoy!

Try sending an email to your gmail account through some other account, not through the same gmail account, and you will get an sms with brief details of the email. Have fun

Thanks for a great tip. I might tell others about it in coming articles

    you are welcome

unfortunately the email feature for bplmobile.com is not currently working

    2009-12-17 01:18:18 Tim Lenahan

I once had set something similar to this up. I wanted to be notified via SMS whenever my wife emailed me. In gMail I set up a filter to forward any email from her address to my cell phone’s SMS address. I could then head to my email box to read the actual email.

    2008-11-28 01:26:54 Jeremy

I use to use this method to forward all my gmail to it on my enV verizon phone. The mobile email client on that phone was awful and by setting up my gmail this way was like ‘push mail’ to my cell. It also only sent one txt and not the full email, so it was more so a preview and if I wanted to read the rest I could just go to my gmail on the phones browser.

hey this actually works so cool.. thanx for the info..

(Comments wont nest below this level) 2008-11-28 03:39:18 Shreela

This is very handy for me when my husband stops by Super Walmart and asks if I want him to pick anything up while he’s there. He’ll forget something if my list is more than 3 items, so I’ve been texting him a list. Even though I have T9, texting a shopping list is a pain, itouch 32, and most times I’m near my computer, so I’ve been emailing the shopping list to him since I learned about it from another tech blog (whose list of servers wasn’t nearly as detailed as yours LOL). We didn’t do this very much at first, so I didn’t arrange to have unlimited text. But since Ike, I decided to pay the extra $5/month to ensure I’ll be able to communicate during any major power losses.

But, although this is convenient for me at this time, I share concerns with Kenneth and Alan. It would be so easy for spammers and marketers to rig something up to send spam texts, usb to serial, which are annoying, but for people that have to pay for each text msg, it will cost them in addition to being annoying.

I’m not pleased with my default T-Mobile options that either don’t have blocking capabilities, or maybe they’re buried so deeply that I haven’t found it yet (I’ve been through my menus many times, and have never found blocking options). I’d love for phones to give options similar to IM programs, where only allowed people could call, text, or send photos.

If those options are available with some unlocked phone hacks, I’d LOVE to read about it here 8^)

(Comments wont nest below this level) 2008-11-28 14:56:03 Matt

Log on to the My T-Mobile site and under the My Account menu select Change Services. Under Messaging, there should be options to block certain types of messages. If you have a messaging bundle, silly bandz banned, it will only block messages that would otherwise be charged, such as international messages or messages over your bundle allowance.

Don’t think they have options that would allow you to only receive messages from certain senders, though.

    2008-12-02 07:08:55 fred

I think this list is old, Argentina companies are different now: Movicom is now Movistar, and CTI is now Claro, so I think they should be changed their email addresses.

as far as i know, personal blocked the mail service, and now charges it $40 (near U$S10) the 500 mail to sms per month (used them for a datacenter monitoring alarm)
I’m not shure about the other companies (and shurely changed theire name)

just what i was looking for since “send to SMS” was retired from google toolbar.
if i’m online and looking for phone nos. or other info instead of jotting it down on a slip of paper, which invariably gets lost, i send an SMS to my cell and can retrieve later

You can indirectly. O2 customer needs an o2.co.uk email address then they can arrange for messages to be (selectively) forwarded to their handset as a MMS message.

To summarize the sites with gateways:

(Comments wont nest below this level) 2008-11-28 18:54:43 Andrew

It’s a good idea to sign up a gmail account, like andrewsphone@gmail.com and have it forward all your SMS’s to your [10digitnumber]@xxx.xxx.xxx email listed in the above post.

That way its both easier for people to remember, and it hides your cell # from people you don’t want to have it.

Just go to Settings in GMail and go to Forwarding and set it up there.

I just did it, and it works.

(Comments wont nest below this level) 2008-11-28 20:53:31 magnoliasouth

Actually you’re making it much more complicated than you need to. You don’t need a new account because you can just tell your friends to email you at yourgmailusername+phone@gmail.com and then set a filter to forward those to your phone.

That’s actually a brilliant idea and I think I’ll do just that!

    2008-11-28 19:52:39 moleculezz

I tested out the one from Aruba and it should be “297number@mas.aw” not “297+number@mas.aw”.

In any case… this is great info, much appreciated. I live abroad so this is perfect to communicate with some relatives and friends, although they can’t reply :S

Well I know that former Cingular also uses @mobile.mycingular.com. I can say that with authority because it works for my husband and I use it daily. I’ve not even tried the new AT&T one.

There is a saying here in the south, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” So there you go.

Does your email ring you to let you know it’s waiting, while you’re not connected? You don’t ever text anyone? The difference between email and SMS are big. This is all about quick messaging without having to log into email and wait for connections. There is NO way my husband is going to check his email several times a day just in case I’m going to send him this quick email message: “Get bread please.”

    2009-11-30 16:17:28 thebatty1

I hear you on this and so far I don’t know of a way for it to alert me on my phone. (palm680).
I want to use email as I have unlimited data.
But NOT unlimited TXT and everyone in the world..(LOL it seems..) seem to “THINK” I have TXT messaging on my plan.
(hmmm or maybe they dont care…)And I dont so I have to pay for all TXT messages…..

    Hello guys,
I am wondering if you could help me in figuring out the sms to email gateways for US based carriers. I have already got the list for a few, but there are still a hundred or so other carriers for which I was not able to obtain the gateway names.

I have a compiled list of all possible gateways for carriers from all over the world sorted by country. If anyone wants the spreadsheet (Excel file), please drop your email ids and I will be happy to send it across.

    Thanks

Hello — I am in Canada, and tried the number@pcs.rogers.com for Rogers cell customers, and it doesn’t work. I got a text message saying, “Bienvenue au service courriel SMS de Rogers. Vous avez du courrier, mais n’etes pas abbonne. Repondez “ouio” pour vous abboner.” — which basically says, “Welcome to the Email SMS service from Rogers. You have mail, but you’re not subscribed. Please reply YES to subscribe.”. What a scam. They don’t even bother to tell you how much the useless service is.

Thanks in advance for any info.

I would like to know that one myself I’m interested in both Telekom (aka MTS) and Telenor for Serbia!..

If anybody can help, I would really appreciate it. And just to mention before somebody copies some old information, Mobtel doesn’t exist anymore… It has been replaced by Telenor.

    Thanks

If you know how to write a windows batch file you could download sendmail and write a little script to send your message to all of the carriers one-by-one. When they reply, you know their other person’s server.

Here’s a tip. Sign up for a new yahoo mail account specifically for sms. I entitled mine simply like sms.name@yahoo.com. Since yahoo mail has push, you basically have the capability of sending sms via email and get notified immediately when there is a response So far so good.

The email to Boost is NOT SMS – it is MMS. This is an important distinction, blackberry 9000 cover, because Boost users that have the $1/day plan don’t pay for SMS, but DO pay 25 cents per message for MMS!

Also, this is a nice site to find out which carrier to use if you only have the number.

Anyone know what happened to Teleflip?

It’s easier to use yahoo messenger to text if you have a Yahoo acct. No need to know the carrier of the person you are texting.

Does nobody know the emails for New Zealand phone numbers? I’ve been searching for like two weeks…

I use this to create ring tones for my friends online and then send them to their phones. It’s a free ring tone and they just pay standard text messaging. They all seem to like it!

Can The Person Ur Txting Txt U Back ?

(Comments wont nest below this level) 2010-01-28 13:43:16 Kiwi

Yes they can, I’ve been “texting” a person in texas (from New Zealand, that doesn’t matter though) and she’s been texting back for about a month now.

You can even add the person to your contact list.

Don’t ask about pricing though, the person I email has unlimited texts so, I don’t know how much it costs per text to text an email address.

T-Mobile has announced the follow-up to the T-Mobile G1 (pictured here), the first-ever Android smartphone. But the carrier hasn't shared many details about the phone, called the T-Mobile G2 with Google, other than to say that it will be the first phone to run on the carrier's speedy HSPA+ network.

In a statement announcing the phone, the company said, "T-Mobile is proud to have launched the world's first Android-powered phone, the T-Mobile G1,serial cable pin, which captured the imagination of developers and consumers alike nearly two years ago. Now, we are readying its successor - the T-Mobile G2 with Google. Delivering tight integration with Google services, pen camera, the G2 will break new ground as the first smartphone specifically designed for our advanced HSPA+ network, which delivers today's available 4G speeds."

T-Mobile's HSPA+ network is not a true 4G network - Sprint remains the only carrier to offer true 4G service. But the HSPA+ network is a speedier version of T-Mobile's 3G network, and it can, in some situations, offer data speeds to rival 4G service. The HSPA+ network was launched in Philadelphia and New York earlier this year, mmc card reader writer, and should be available more widely available by the end of the year.

As for the first phone to support the HSPA+ network, car dvd gps player, the T-Mobile G2 with Google, T-Mobile says only this: "In the coming weeks, we'll share more details about the G2 and offer exclusive first access to current T-Mobile customers." Stay tuned for more details.

Comments (0)PermalinkShare Amazon Offers BlackBerry Torch for $99 Tuesday August 17, 2010

RIM's BlackBerry Torch smartphone has only been on the market for a few days, but savvy shoppers already can find steep discounts on the new phone. Amazon.com, for one, is offering the Torch for just $99, less than half of the phone's $199.99 list price.

The Torch is the first BlackBerry to feature both a touch screen and a hardware keyboard. It's also the first phone to ship with RIM's brand-new and completely redesigned BlackBerry 6 operating system.

The Torch was launched late last week on AT&T's network, and the carrier is still selling the phone for $199.99. Many bloggers are saying that Amazon's discounted price is a sign that the company has lost faith in the Torch, citing relatively weak demand for the phone in its first few days on the market. RIM, however, says that Amazon's price has been in effect since the phone was launched, hdmi hdmi cable, and is not an indication of problems with the phone. Amazon regularly offers discounted prices on its lineup of phones,sd memory 4gb, RIM says.

I agree; I don't think the Torch's situation is quite as dire as many bloggers would have you believe. BlackBerry phones typically appeal to business users, usb sim card reader, not the type of tech enthusiasts who are going to line up to buy a new device as soon as it's available. I'm willing to wait a few weeks -- or even months -- to see how well the BlackBerry Torch fares. I think its design is attractive, and the BlackBerry 6 OS,cf compact flash card, in particular, is well done.

NOTE: This post has been edited to clarify that Amazon has not cut the price of the Torch, but has been offering it for $99 since the phone's launch.

With all the buzz surrounding the latest Android phones and Apple's new iPhone, it's easy to forget about Research In Motion's BlackBerry phones. The new BlackBerry Torch, however, is designed to bring attention right back to these still-popular devices.

This slider-style smartphone is RIM's first BlackBerry to feature both a touch-screen and a hardware-based QWERTY keyboard, and is the first phone to ship with the completely redesigned BlackBerry 6 operating system.

On paper, the Torch sounds like a winner. But how does it stand up in hands-on use? Read my full review of the BlackBerry Torch to find out. And check out my list of today's best BlackBerry phones to see where the Torch lands.

Sprint announced today that the Samsung Epic 4G, the carrier's second 4G smartphone, will be available beginning Tuesday, August 31 for $249.99 when you sign a new two-year service agreement. That price factors in a $100 mail-in rebate.

The Samsung Epic 4G will be Sprint's offering from Samsung's Galaxy S series of Android phones, avatar nds, two of which already are available: the Samsung Vibrant from T-Mobile and the Samsung Captivate from AT&T. Verizon Wireless plans to offer the Samsung Fascinate,1gb memory sd, but has yet to announce pricing or a launch date.

Like its Galaxy S siblings, the Epic 4G features a 4-inch Super AMOLED touch-screen and a powerful 1-GHz processor for speedy performance. But the Epic 4G boasts two features missing from the other Galaxy S phones: one is a slide-out QWERTY keyboard for easier typing, and the other is support for high-speed 4G networks. The Epic 4G will be Sprint's second 4G phone, after the HTC EVO 4G,spy video camera, which was launched earlier this summer.

Sprint will allow customers to reserve an Epic 4G handset ahead of the official launch; beginning August 13, the carrier will be accepting reservations at Sprint.com/Epic4G. At launch, the Samsung Epic 4G will be available in Sprint stores and at Sprint.com, as well as in Radio Shack, Best Buy,baby monitor video, and Walmart stores.
