在Blink-182乐队2005年末宣告解散之后，乐队主唱兼吉他手汤姆·迪朗格（Tom DeLonge）宣布正式创建个人的最新乐队Angels and Airwaves。乐队名“Angels and Airwaves”最初由Tom DeLonge在开车时想出，组成这个名字的三个词的首字母组合起来是“AAA”，而且如果将中间的字母A倒转，组成的“*A”又刚好是他宝贝女儿的名字。
在刚刚组建Angels and Airwaves乐队的时候，Tom DeLonge在接受采访时不止一次的声称不会再做与Blink-182乐队风格类似的音乐，Angels and Airwaves要像U2和平克·弗洛伊德（Pink Floyd）那样做一些能够永远改变摇滚乐面貌的东西。和Tom DeLonge一起组成Angels and Airwaves乐队，想要一同完成这个音乐梦想的队友包括前Boxcar Racer的吉他手大卫·肯尼迪（David Kennedy），“子孙乐队”(The Offspring）的鼓手阿托姆·韦拉德（Atom Willard）以及The Distillers乐队的贝斯手瑞安·西恩（Ryan Sinn）。
2006年4月12日，Angels and Airwaves在加州的Glass House首次亮相，获得歌迷一致好评。5月23日，Angels and Airwaves乐队首张录音室专辑《We Don't Need To Whisper》通过Geffen公司正式发行，发行首周以12万7千张的单周销量名列Billboard 200专辑榜的第四位。接下来，A a A将在英国和北美举办一系列的巡演，来宣传乐队的首张专辑。
