Summertime Treats ( II )
Cool treats for these hot summer months
by Pamela Osment
"Frozen ice on a stick”
In America, popsicles top the list of children's summertime f*orites. So it is no surprise that an 11-year-old invented them in 1905. One winter day, Frank Epperson left his fruit-fl*ored soda outside. The stick he had used to stir the soda was still in the drink. When the two things froze together, the popsicle was born! Kids soon decided the “frozen ice on a stick” made a great summer treat.
Ice cream
Ice cream is another summer f*orite. The earliest form of ice cream dates back to the 4th century B.C. History also shows that around the 1st century in China, people began mixing milk and ice together. The idea of these frozen desserts tr*eled around the world. Early Americans were the first to call these desserts “ice cream”.
Italy has its own form of ice cream called “Italian Gelato”. It's made from sugar, milk, fl*orings and sometimes fruit. Gelato is less than 35 percent air, which causes it to be very thick and very fl*orful.
Other American f*orites
Americans can't h*e barbecues without hot dogs or hamburgers. Both kinds of meat probably were carried to America from Germany. But they soon became “as American as apple pie.”
Watermelon is America's f*orite summer fruit. And freshly squeezed lemonade is always welcome on a hot summer day!
What's your f*orite treat? Whatever it is, be sure to enjoy it this summer!
